Why use LED sports lighting?

It’s becoming more popular that lighting systems are now getting updated and replaced. The word is rapidly spreading about the benefits of LED sports lights as several venues can see an immediate difference. Are you curious about the kinds of bonuses that go along with LED lights?

1. Energy

The amount of your electricity cost is immediately reduced. The average monthly costs using previous sport lighting fixtures including MH/HPS are reduced by three-quarters. The yearly cost-saving is now worth thousands of dollars extra. HID lights use 1000 Watt lamps to produce the same amount of light a 100 Watt LED light produces. It’s easy to see why the same level of light results in an immediate cost-cutting solution.

The higher the CRI number is, the better the ability to see in the dark. Each sport activity will require a minimum since the color rendering index (CRI) does have limits. Too much CRI will overpower and wash-out natural colors.

The starting point for any professional sport starts with 60 that’s cool white. It then goes up to 65-85 which is in the warm daylight spectrum.

4. No strobing effects

It’s not exactly true but the visible flashing cannot be seen by the naked eye. Older LED lights cycled much slower in the 1970s because they were used for indicator lights for electronics. Now the technology has improved the number of cycles to range between 20,000-40,000Hz. This frequency is so rapid that it cannot be detected by HDTV cameras that use high shutter speed.

The only time that strobing is ever noticed is when LEDs have reached their last moments of life. Even at that point, the amount of visible flashing is still minimal compared to old fluorescent tubes used in offices.

5. No warm-up time

LED sport light systems do not have a warm-up time and turn on when they are needed. The light can be raised gradually with the help of a dimmer control, or full power right away. This is an advantage over the HID lamps that take at least 15 minutes to obtain a full light brightness. Using the older style of lamps needed to be timed to work at night. This inconvenience is also frustrating on cloudy days where lights are needed right away.

Knowing that any LED sports lamp is ready to operate anytime is ideal for sports This also works when turning them off since there is no cooling-off period either. This allows lights to be controlled faster since HID lamps need 20 minutes to relight if the power is cut-off. Any professional sports event doesn’t have that patience to wait for that long.

6. Reduces ‘Blue Light’ exposure

If you don’t know what blue light exposure is, the best description is light that’s harmful to your retinas. It often comes from smartphone or tablet screens but isn’t limited to sports lighting. There is a harmful level of blue-green light that comes from HID sport light fixtures. High-intensity lamps including the older street lamps put-out large amounts of this blue light.

The newer LEDs used for sports have a color temperature that filters out blue light. All of the pro sports arenas use 4000K that is warm sunlight. There’s more blue light in the range of cool white 7000-7500K that’s used for industrial warehouses.

7. Easy to control (DMX/DALI)

The control boards used for helping to dim sports lights and adding effects are done using additional hardware. Special systems such as DMX and DALI are solutions that control slide switches and on/off buttons for LED lights. The DMX system is more advanced and can control as many as 512 LED lights (if there is 1 channel per light). The DALI can control up to 64 and is more simplified for basic dimming controls.

It’s important to point-out that DMX is better suited for color-changing lights and can be controlled using laptop computer controls. DALI would need an additional color-changing controller if lights were hooked-up.

8. Lower spill light

With the benefit of LED sports lights, controlling light spill is easier to solve. The amount of light that is directed toward the playing field is much more focused than HID lights can be. LED lights have a direction that is always 180 degrees while HID is 360 degrees. This means the amount of HID light must be controlled with reflectors rather than where it comes out.

LED lights will have special lenses to narrow-down a focal beam varying between 10-25 degrees. There’s also optical glass that reduces the amount of light spill or glare that comes from improperly focused LED lights.

9. Waterproof benefits

Weather can have a terrible effect on outdoor sports lights if they aren’t rated for the right kind of protection. Different sport locations all have weather patterns that can be wetter or moisture-sensitive than others. It’s important to choose the correct kind of IP rating that determines how much your lighting equipment needs protection. Rainy and wet weather is better suited for IP67, while IP65 is perfect for dry locations.

Even in that case, light rainfall every-so-often would be better to use IP66 that’s a general all-purpose rating. Locations that are located near any kind of water should always use IP67 since fog or high moisture is present.

10. Lower heat production

Amazingly, LED light panels used for sports lighting are excellent choices for low heat dissipation. The amount of heat that is produced on the semiconductor board where the LED is located has a built-in rear heat vent. This transfers the heat and it rises away from the circuits that are placed behind the fixture itself. As opposed to the heat generated by HID lamps, the LED light is very minimal averaging 120-150 degrees Fahrenheit.

Larger stadium light fixtures may reach as much as 212F, but not over that level. This is compared to HID lights that can reach dangerously high temperatures of several hundred degrees.

How to achieve the best sports lighting design and standards

Sports lighting contractors and LED lighting experts will know more about what is needed for a sports field or court. But it’s a good idea to know what counts the most when getting the most out of LED lights. Here is a quick guide that helps you understand what is needed to sport lighting.

1. Brightness (lux level)

It all starts with what should be the recommended wattage that will determine the amount of light you need. This shouldn’t be more than what is currently used if there are HID lights that need to be replaced. The playing area needs to have an acceptable amount of light but not drowning it to death. Too much brightness from higher wattage simply produces too much light.

With the number of fixtures used, each light should be exactly the same wattage that is based on pole height. The distance from the playing area also needs to be considered, since the LED light needs to be stronger. Naturally a lighting professional will make the appropriate calculations based on Lumens and distance.

2. Light uniformity standards

A playing field needs to have blanketed lighting that’s evenly leveled across the playing surface. This is part of the job that’s left to experts since several lights are used to fill each section. Professional sports require a specific requirement of what’s accepted, so a uniformity chart will likely be requested showing light values. This means that patches, where light is stitched-in, is measured by the light intensity equal or greater to adjoining sections.

This process is scientific and takes time to adjust since regulation sports lighting has strict standards for light levels. When the light uniformity levels are approved, an arena or stadium is allowed to host professional sports games.

3. Sport class

There type of sport that is played is judged by the rating of sport class. These are categorized into three separate categories but generally, two are the highest standards. These are Class I & II and include professional and semi-professional athletes. Class III is strictly high school but not limited to private arenas. Depending on the level of class that your venue is focused on, the lighting conditions will need to conform to their standards.

Even though Class III does have slightly lower standards for lighting, that doesn’t mean that the first two classes aren’t ideal. This lighting can be chosen if the arena or court is built to match regulation standards as well.

4. Color temperature

The specific type of light for LED light units cannot be adjusted so easily. Some lights are available, allow temperature controls but mainly sports lighting fixtures are set to a selected Kelvin. Using a DMX temperature controller will help adjust the LED light further so levels for Class I-III can be intermixed. This is a separate controller that can control an RGB sports light that allows for temperature changing control.

In most cases, this light is best used for decorative effects that create atmosphere and entertainment value at sporting events. Whenever a designated light temperature is chosen, that should either be 2000-4000K, however anything higher may be too energetic.

5. GR rating scale (glare control)

Not every sport will have the same element of excitement or pace, which also applies to the lighting comfort levels. The GR rating is how light is grading on appearing for poor to excellent levels. The same concept can be applied to the difference between tennis and football. Tennis tends to use 4000K while football will use 5000K or higher. The reason may be applied to the GR rating and glare control.

Depending on the amount of excitability that an audience should receive, the Kelvin level is increased. More laid back sports have relaxing colors. The GR measures this give providing a grade from 1-9. With a rating of 1, this will measure as unnoticed but with 9 it becomes uncomfortable.

6. CRI

The color rendering index measures the amount of light that is visible and what becomes washed-out. As important as the right color used for creating the mood for movies, using CRI also matches the type of sport. More aggressive sports use higher CRI to increase levels of excitability, while lower levels are reserved for casual pro sports. You won’t find high CRI at a Badminton tournament.

A CRI scale measures from 0-100 and depending on the professional sport that’s played and can range from 65-80+. Depending on the sport itself, the amount of Kelvin also determines the ratings that are involved.

7. Sports field pole height

This is going to be determined exclusively by the sport that’s played. It also has a lot to do with the size of the venue or stadium where spectators gather. The pole will also need to be suitable for holding a light fixture at heights above 100 feet or more. The elements such as high wind and weather are a big factor too. Small venues are easier to handle since pole height doesn’t need to exceed 20 feet.

The light pole also needs a secure foundation base so it doesn’t topple from poor footing. These foundations are usually built ahead of time, based on the size of the light mast used.

8. Sports field pole positioning

There is a big difference when a lighting design is created for sports events. The size of a playing field or stadium will need to determine the right placement of lights used. The issue of sidelight vs corner light is often discussed. Side lighting makes a field more uniformly lit but, a well-planned corner lighting project can also do just as much. It takes more care to make corner lighting effective in a larger stadium.

Smaller areas will be easier to light with corner lights, so side lighting in bigger stadiums is optimal. Unless corner lights have extra poles in between, this effort will have problematic and under-lit spots on the playing field.

9. Number of poles used

How many poles does it take to light a sporting venue? Once again this is a matter that is all based on the shape and size of the area where a sport is played. There will also be the field, court itself that is the focus of being lit up. Most game areas are rectangular making it easier to light, whereas a round or diamond-shaped has more consideration. For tall arenas and stadiums, the number of poles may also show what kind of sports event is played there.

Tall mast lights for football and soccer are commonly being replaced for lower side lighting inside the stadium itself. Since heights above 150 feet for high mast poles are harder to maintain.

10. Ceiling height of indoor sports field

At indoor arenas, the height of the ceiling needs to match the type of sport that will be played inside. This means that only a handful of sports are ideal for this purpose. Basketball, tennis, volleyball, swimming, water polo, boxing, and wrestling are all perfect for indoor venues. This requires that the minimum height for a ceiling needs to be a minimum of 7.6 meters to 9.1 meters. This ranges from 21-27 feet tall or more depending on the sport itself.

It’s not uncommon that ceiling height won’t affect the sport played but the lighting will need to have that height. To light a court area, the minimum height should be 20 feet. High overhead lighting can also be placed on the outer parameters.

It’s a complete mess when you see big cities like New York, Houston, and Los Angeles sticking-out like sore thumbs. One of the main culprits is the use of HID type lights that are omnidirectional.

Despite the use of a reflector inside a lighting fixture, HID lights like metal halide and high-pressure sodium emit light coming from all angles. It’s a big strong light bulb that burns hot and super bright. When this light hits a target it tends to bounce off surfaces including sidewalks, streets, buildings, and into the air. So much light is often seen from the countryside radiating like a horizon glow.

LED light is helping to reduce this problem since this form of light is primarily directional. It goes where it needs to since it only has 180 degrees directional power. Because the color temperatures can be adjusted to more natural daylight colors, light pollution is lessened.

3. Reducing maintenance costs

All forms of sports lighting indeed need maintenance to work correctly. They must be clean from dirt build-up so the light coming from them is clear and unobstructed. But without having to change a burnt-out bulb, this isn’t a challenge for LED lights. The average life HID bulbs is set at 3000 hours. Through the year it’s a minimum that 400 hours will be used for gaming, but at least 600 hours in reality.

This is roughly 5 years for a lifespan, but HID lamps lose their potential output after half that time. It’s worse in winter because of cold weather, after lights are shut down; they tend to crack faster. With LED lighting no matter the weather or length of time, they can last up to 25,000-50,000 hours. On average this allows their lifespan to be a minimum of 25 years.
